Teen Parents
Changing the Lives of
Young Parents Through Mentoring Relationships
Teen Parents, a core ministry of Central Indiana Youth for Christ, encourages teen parents toward positive change. In this program, each young parent is matched up with an adult mentor in a small group. Mentors provide small group leadership as well as one-on-one mentoring. Meetings include guest speakers and group discussions on such topics as parenting skills, life skills, wellness education, high school completion and employment skills. Studies show that teaching parenting skills encourages confidence and self esteem, decreases child abuse, results in better health and better jobs, improves standards of living, increases school attendance, and reduces dependency on government subsidies.
These small groups offer a place to be "real" and connect with other teen parents experiencing much of the same challenges and joys. Adult mentors will model honesty and integrity as they maintain a setting for healthy, trustworthy and meaningful relationships within the small group. Through these relationships the cycle of teen parenting can be changed forever by encouraging a new pattern of living for teen parents and their children.

Teens that are in healthy relationships with adult mentors are significantly more likely to show improvement in self-esteem, social skills, parenting skills, academic education, and successful employment.
